On Wednesday, 11th May 2022, the Israeli military shot Palestinian and Al Jazeera channel’s journalist Shereen Abu Aqleh while covering a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, Shereen was shot in the head, and she was taken to the hospital before dying. Al Jazeera channel is accusing the Israeli army of killing her intentionally. She has been representing the Plaesteninan’s voice and was wearing a press jacket that identifies her as a journalist.
However, the Israeli army stated that they are looking into the possibility that Palestinian shooters killed her.
And on the same day, the Israeli occupation forces stormed the home of the martyr Shereen Abu Aqleh and asked the crowd not to gather, not sing any national anthems, and remove the Palestinian flags in the house. Which they refused, and a clash happened between them in the house.
Since this news, Palestinians took to Twitter to share their memories of Shereen’s works in the media covering the war between Palestine and Israel, considering her death unfair and a great loss. She was one of the most courageous women journalists in Palestine.
People considered her an icon; almost all the Palestinian generations grew up watching her covering the war between Palestine and Israel.
Shereen was the true voice of Palestine.
Shereen was a hero, who we all would listen to since we were kids to learn about the war. She might have been just a face on our screens, but there’s more to know about the late hero.
Who was Shereen Abu Aqleh?
Shereen was a 51 Palestenian journalist who was known to cover wars, specifically the Israeli and Plaestinian conflict. She initially studied architecture at the University of Science and Technology in Jordan, then she shifted to Journalism and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Yarmouk University in Jordan.
After graduating, she worked for multiple Palestinian sites like UNRWA, Voice of Palestine Radio, Amman Satellite channel, the Miftah foundation, and Monte Carlo Radio. And she has been working with the Al Jazeera channel for 25 years, since 1997.
Shereen never shied away from a challenge.
Shereen covered four conflicts in the Gaza Strip to show the world what was happening there that made the Israeli occupation accuse her several times of photographing security areas and threatening her, and were planning to kill her. But that didn’t ever make her step away from her job, which was her mission in life.
She always made multiple video media reports about the Israeli forces storming the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem several times and about the suffering of Palestinian families and the demolition of their homes by the Israeli military.
Moreover, she’s also chronicled the Israeli war on Lebanon in 2009 and multiple events in the United States, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Egypt.
