Egypt FA say Liverpool reject Mohamed Salah's call-up for World Cup qualifier over Covid risk

The Egyptian FA released a statement saying Liverpool rejected a call-up for Mohamed Salah for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers due to concerns over Covid and the United Kingdom’s recently imposed travel restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Egypt is a red list country for traveling back to England, which means Salah would need to quarantine upon his return, meaning he would miss matches for the Premier League club.

The Egyptian national team will hold a closed training camp on 28 August in preparation for the games against Angola and Gabon in the 2022 African World Cup qualifiers.

“We received a letter from Liverpool excusing Mohamed Salah from joining Egypt’s preparatory camp for the World Cup qualifiers,” read a statement by the EFA.

“The EFA is in direct contact with the FIFA to facilitate the process of allowing international players to join their national teams for the World Cup qualifiers,” the statement added.
