Mirna Gamil

A Qalyubia court sentenced a 26-year-old man to death for the premeditated murder of Mirna Gamil. The defendant stalked and stabbed Gamil in the street in broad daylight after she rejected his marriage proposal.

Mirna was a 22-year-old woman described by her family as kind and gentle. She lived with her mother and sister after her father passed away. Her loved ones say she was innocent, hardworking, and full of life before the tragedy.

Months of Threats

After rejecting the suspect’s marriage proposal, Mirna received repeated threatening messages last October. Her family changed her phone number multiple times, trying to protect her. Despite their efforts, the harassment continued, escalating fear and tension in her daily life.

On the day of the attack, Mirna was returning home after shopping and visiting her sister’s house. The suspect confronted her in the street and stabbed her multiple times. When her mother came down, she found Mirna on the ground, lifeless, in her arms.

Authorities arrested the suspect and began a full investigation. Mirna’s funeral took place in Qalyubia, with family and community mourning her loss. Her story highlights the dangers of harassment and the urgent need for protection against threats and violence.

This tragedy has reignited debate around how rejection is handled in Egypt. Many argue that saying no is still not socially normalized, and that women often face pressure, harassment, or worse just for asserting boundaries. For many families, incidents like this deepen fears about everyday safety.
