The Egyptian Court of Cassation on Sunday issued a final death penalty verdict for an Egyptian physics teacher who brutally murdered and dismembered his student, Ehab Ashraf. Driven by gambling debts, the perpetrator exploited a teacher-student bond to execute a calculated and horrific ransom plot.

The Egyptian Court of Cassation announced a final and binding ruling rejecting the appeal submitted by the defense of Mohamed Abdel Badie, a 25-year-old physics teacher, and upholding his death sentence.

This decision marks the end of a legal process that began in February 2024 following the horrific murder of 16-year-old student Ehab Ashraf, a case that shocked the nation due to its extreme brutality and the breach of trust between a teacher and his pupil. The ruling follows the initial sentence handed down by the Mansoura Criminal Court and subsequent confirmation by the appellate court, meaning all legal avenues for the defendant have been exhausted.

Legal Background of the Case

The Court of Cassation’s decision to uphold the execution comes after a thorough review of the trial proceedings and the evidence presented. The defense had previously attempted to argue for a psychological evaluation of the defendant, claiming he suffered from mental disturbances that influenced his actions.

However, the court found the evidence of premeditation and deliberate planning to be overwhelming. The initial death sentence was issued on May 21 after the court received the religious opinion of the Grand Mufti, as per Egyptian law. With today’s rejection of the final appeal, the case moves toward the implementation phase where the convict will face execution by hanging.

Details of the Crime and the Optical Illusion Maneuver

The incident dates back to February 13, 2024, in the village of Satamoni, Dakahlia Governorate. Investigations revealed that Mohamed Abdel Badie, a university student who gave private lessons in physics and chemistry, lured Ehab Ashraf to his study center under the guise of filming a video for social media.

The teacher exploited the trust built over months of instruction to convince Ehab to participate in an “optical illusion” trick. He told the boy that he would pass a knife across his neck and use editing software to make it appear as though blood was flowing without causing harm. Trusting his mentor, the boy complied, only for the teacher to use a real knife to stab him in the neck and chest, ending his life.

Motive Linked to Gambling Debts and Financial Distress

The investigations by the Public Prosecution uncovered a dark motive behind the killing. Abdel Badie confessed that he had become addicted to an online betting application known as ‘1xbet,’ where he lost significant amounts of money.

To cover his losses, he had borrowed hundreds of thousands of pounds from relatives under the pretense of investing in a mobile phone business. As the deadlines to repay his debts approached, he grew desperate. According to Cairo 24, he admitted to planning the kidnapping of one of his students to demand a ransom from the family.

He targeted Ehab specifically because he knew the boy’s father owned a successful household appliances business and a silicone factory, believing the family would pay any amount to save their only son.

The Brutal Disposal of the Body and Ransom Demand

After committing the murder, the defendant realized he could not easily hide the body to facilitate his ransom plot. He proceeded to use the same knife to dismember the boy’s body into three distinct parts: the head, the upper torso, and the lower limbs. He wrapped these parts in plastic bags and fertilizer sacks, discarding them in various agricultural drains and fields across the district to mislead investigators.

Despite the murder, he contacted the family and demanded a ransom of 500,000 Egyptian pounds, claiming the boy had been kidnapped and was still alive. His plan failed when a local farmer discovered the lower half of the body, triggering a massive security operation.

Confessions and Forensic Evidence

During the interrogation, Abdel Badie provided a chilling step-by-step account of the crime. He described how he practiced with the knife and how he struck the boy a second time when he tried to scream for help. Forensic reports confirmed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds and documented the precise manner in which the body was dismembered.

Security forces were able to track the defendant through surveillance footage, mobile phone records, and witnesses who saw the boy entering the teacher’s center but never leaving. The owner of a household appliance store also testified that the defendant had purchased the murder weapon from him shortly before the crime took place.

The Aftermath and Societal Impact

The finality of the death sentence has brought a sense of closure to the victim’s family and the local community in Dakahlia. The case sparked a national conversation regarding the oversight of private tutoring and the dangers of unregulated online gambling applications.

The brutal nature of the crime, committed by an educator against a child, led to widespread public outrage and calls for the maximum penalty. With the Court of Cassation’s ruling, the legal file is officially closed, and the convict awaits the execution of the sentence as determined by the Ministry of Interior and the Prosecution.
