Alright, we’re going to start prejudging Ramadan series’ and give you our unwanted opinions.
I’ll start with the first and only show I’ve watched so far, and it’s “Khali Balak min Zizi.“
Before anything, starting this show, I thought it’ll either be a hit or a miss. The series had many cast and the same director behind Qabeel, which was a great hit. This is why I started to think that maybe this one will flop.
I know it’s too early to judge an entire series just by its first series, but when you have tens of shows to choose from, prejudgement from the first episode plays a significant role.
Let me start with the pros; the music is excellent.
That’s it.
Moving on to the several cons…starting with the story
So far, it looks like it’s somehow the opposite of Juno.
Juno was a young girl who got pregnant when she didn’t want to, and Zizi is an older woman who can’t get pregnant.
Maybe they’re paying homage to Elliot’s page? Who knows.
Seriously though, the styling and art direction are just bluntly copied from Juno, and it’s not okay.
The color grading is probably the worst I’ve ever seen in my life.
It’s just overly saturated, yet their skin is purple, and all the colors are just annoyingly bad. I know this is super technical, but it’s making it visually hard to watch.
Fun fact: this coloring is especially bad for color blind people.
The skin is overly smoothed.
Guys, seriously, the whole thing feels like a bad Instagram filter.
Neither Amina Khalil nor Aly Kassem is a comedian.
Look, they’re great actors, but not everyone is a comedian; especially with the subtle comedy, they’re going for.
The character Zizi is just unbearable.
She’s just rude, annoying, and obnoxious; I can’t see myself watching this character for 30+ episodes.
The best part, they’re downplaying domestic abuse just because it came from a woman.
For fuck’s sake, can we not glamorize abuse in any way?
Final verdict on Khali Balak min Zizi: Don’t bother!
What do you think?
