If you’ve ever dreamed of visiting paradise, Hankorab Beach (also known as Sharm El Luli) is probably what you’ve imagined.
Tucked within Wadi El Gemal National Park near Marsa Alam, Hankorab is a mesmerizing stretch of crystal-clear turquoise waters, pristine white sands, and vibrant coral reefs.
Often hailed as the “Maldives of Egypt,” Hankorab consistently ranks among the top beaches globally, attracting eco-tourists, divers, and snorkelers from all over the world.
But paradise isn’t peaceful these days—Hankorab is facing a serious threat, and time is running out.
What’s Happening at Hankorab?
On March 9, the Egyptian Federation of Tourist Chambers abruptly halted all visits to Hankorab Beach.
Although officially attributed to the need to reassess management practices by the Ministry of Environment, troubling developments quickly came to light.
The environmental organization HEPCA sounded an alarm, declaring Hankorab Beach at serious risk due to illegal encroachments and unauthorized construction projects driven by private interests.
In their statement, HEPCA explained,
“This globally acclaimed site for ecotourism and diving, hosting rare coral reefs and endangered sea turtle nesting areas, is now endangered by a commercial project benefiting private entities at the expense of the environment and people’s rights.”
Adding to the severity of the situation, Ayman H. Taher, Chairman of Blue Heaven Holidays, reported that legally authorized Italian investors—who had been granted permits for environmentally sustainable tourism projects—were forcibly removed by unknown investors conducting unauthorized construction.
Ministry of Environment’s Clarification Raises More Questions
In response to growing public concern, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment issued an official statement asserting:
“All permitted activities at Hankorab Beach are carried out strictly under existing laws and regulations, ensuring they align with the objectives of the protected area without harming its natural habitats.”
The Ministry further clarified that ongoing developments, including the construction of visitor facilities such as restrooms, signage, and other infrastructure, are part of an approved management plan intended to balance ecological preservation with enhancing visitor safety and experience.
However, this statement contrasts sharply with reports of illegal construction and unauthorized commercial activities, leading to widespread confusion and raising critical questions about the true nature and oversight of these developments.
A Treasure with Rich History and Ecological Importance
Historically, Hankorab has been cherished for its untouched natural beauty and ecological diversity.
Recognized officially in 2003 as part of the protected Wadi El Gemal National Park under Prime Ministerial Decree No. 143, it has been carefully managed to balance tourism with ecological preservation.
Over the years, Hankorab has garnered international acclaim from platforms like TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet, becoming a cornerstone of sustainable tourism in Egypt.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Hankorab plays a crucial role in environmental conservation. Its coral reefs are home to a wide variety of marine life, and it serves as an important nesting ground for endangered sea turtles.
Preserving this ecosystem isn’t just about maintaining its beauty—it’s about safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.
Economic and Touristic Impact
Hankorab Beach isn’t just an environmental gem; it’s also a significant economic asset. Ecotourism at Hankorab supports local livelihoods, generates critical revenue, and boosts Egypt’s international image as a premier sustainable tourism destination.
Losing Hankorab to unchecked development would not only devastate its delicate ecosystem but would also harm Egypt’s reputation and severely impact the local economy that relies heavily on responsible tourism.
The Fight to Save Hankorab
Activists, local authorities, and concerned citizens are urgently rallying to protect this natural treasure. Al-Qusair Prosecution has initiated official investigations, and the Red Sea Governorate has ordered the immediate removal of illegal constructions.
However, greater public pressure and international awareness are essential to ensure these measures are enforced effectively.
