As the summer season kicks off, we’re spending more time swimming and soaking up the sun. It’s all fun—until the hair struggles start. From dryness to frizz and everything in between, summer can be tough on your hair. Here’s how to deal with the most common hair problems this season.
1. Frizz Explosion
Humidity makes your hair puff up like crazy—especially for curly-haired girlies. To tame it, go for anti-frizz serums or lightweight oils like argan oil. Use a leave-in conditioner before heading out, and never brush dry hair. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb when it’s damp.
2. Dry, Straw-Like Hair
Sun and saltwater strip your hair’s moisture fast. Deep-condition at least once a week, rinse your hair with fresh water before and after swimming, and treat it to hydrating masks—coconut oil is a great quick fix.
3. Greasy Roots but Dry Ends
Sweat plus sun gives you oily roots and parched ends. Use dry shampoo between washes, but only at the roots. Apply conditioner only from mid-length to ends, and try a gentle scalp scrub once a week to balance things out.
4. Scalp Sunburn
It hurts—and it’s easy to forget your scalp needs SPF too. Wear a hat or scarf when out in the sun, or spritz your scalp with SPF spray. If it’s already burnt, aloe vera gel is your best friend.
5. Tangles and Knots from Swimming
Saltwater and waves turn your hair into a tangled mess. Braiding your hair before swimming helps a lot. After your dip, use a detangling spray while your hair is still damp and gently comb it through.
6. Hair Color Fading
If your hair’s dyed, you’ll notice fading fast. Protect it with UV hair sprays before sun or swimming, rinse right after the beach or pool, and wash with sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo—unless you’re going for a deep cleanse.
7. Split Ends Multiply
Heat and dryness = more split ends. Trim your ends every 6–8 weeks, apply heat protectant when styling or sun-exposing, and keep your hair moisturized to reduce breakage.
8. Sand Stuck in Hair
Post-beach hair always feels like it brought home half the sand. Let your hair dry before shaking it out or brushing. Rinse at beach showers if you can, then use a soft-bristle brush to gently get rid of any leftover grains.
9. Flat Hair from Sweat
Humidity kills volume in seconds. Use volumizing sprays or dry shampoo at the roots, and flip your hair upside down while blow-drying for that extra lift.
10. Constant Washing = Weaker Hair
Daily washing, especially with shampoo—can make your strands weak. If you’re not swimming every day, try spacing out washes with dry shampoo or even co-washing. If you are swimming daily, stick to gentle, sulfate-free shampoos.
