A devastating family tragedy has shaken the village of Delga in Minya after a stepmother poisons husband and his six children by poisoning their bread.
The children’s biological mother survived the attack after detecting something wrong with the food.
The incident
The tragedy began when the father reconciled with his first wife, Om Hashem, following a period of separation.
This reunion triggered intense jealousy in his second wife, who feared losing her position in the household.
The second wife prepared traditional Shamsi bread, a popular variety in northern Egypt, but added poison before sending it to the family. The bread was consumed during what would become the family’s final meal together.
Those poisoned and killed were Ahmed Nasser (5), Omar Nasser (7), Reem Nasser (10), Moh. Nasser (11), Rahma Nasser (12), Farha Nasser (14), and the dad Nasser Mohamed (48).
How the mother survived
Om Hashem was preparing to serve the bread when she tasted a small piece and immediately noticed a bitter flavor that caused intense thirst.
Recognizing something was wrong, she stopped eating and tried to warn the others.
However, her husband and six children had already consumed significant portions of the poisoned bread. According to the family’s uncle, Ali Mohamed, this meal marked the last time the family would be together.
Fatal consequences
Within hours of consumption, all seven victims developed severe symptoms including nausea, fever, sweating, and weakness.
Despite emergency medical treatment, the poison proved fatal.
The children died in sequence, followed by their father. Om Hashem was left as the sole survivor of the poisoning attempt.
Investigation and arrest
Initial reports suggested a meningitis outbreak, but the Ministry of Health quickly ruled out any infectious disease.
Laboratory analysis confirmed deliberate poisoning, corroborating Om Hashem’s account of the bread’s unusual taste and her immediate physical reaction.
The second wife was arrested and charged with seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. The case has become known as “The Delga Village Poisoning Case.”
Legal proceedings remain ongoing as authorities pursue justice for the victims while the surviving mother attempts to rebuild her life after losing her entire family.
